Position Profile:

Operations Manager

Serving customers for over 50 years, Elk River Machine Company (ERMC), a Cretex Company, is a nationally recognized ISO 9001 certified provider of electro-hydraulic equipment solutions, custom steel fabrications and machined components to the railway, industrial, energy, infrastructure and aerospace industries. This position reports directly to the President of ERMC and is located in Elk River, MN.

Position Summary:


The Operations Manager oversees all manufacturing operations (multiple shifts), including capacity planning of manufacturing, machining, metal fabrication, welding, outside processing, paint, final assembly and test. This position serves as the key operations leader to plan and direct work flow through the manufacturing operations to maximize capacity and productivity, and ensure customer quality and delivery requirements are met.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safe working environment, free from significant hazards and complying with all State and Federal laws.
  • Develop & execute a strategic operations plan to ensure sufficient human, machine and facility capacity and capabilities exist to meet the company's strategic growth plans and customer requirements.
  • Deploy a master capacity plan; ensuring production orders are executed to meet customer's on-time delivery requirements.
  • Oversee daily operations activities and direct operations personnel to ensure effective use of capacity. Manage personnel and equipment to ensure labor productivity and cost objective metrics are met, including estimate vs actual, indirect labor, scrap and rework.
  • Provide new project quoting support to sales, for purposes of accurately estimating resources required to produce quoted projects.
  • Communicate effectively with Sales, Engineering, Finance and Quality to convey lead-times, capacity constraints, and clearly communicate and resolve urgent situations.
  • Ability to prioritize resources between competing production requirements and act with sense of urgency to support customer requirements.
  • Define standard production flows and operational sequencing, working with sales and engineering to ensure sufficient information is conveyed to send work to the shop.
  • Oversee management of facilities & equipment, including preventative maintenance programs.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Proven Track Record In Job Shop, Large Capital Equipment Manufacturing Operations
  • Prior Direct Operational Oversight of Metal Processing, Machining, Welding and Assembly
  • Master Capacity and Facility Requirements Planning/Layout/Flow
  • Equipment Upgrade and Expansion Planning and Capital Request Justification
  • Proven Track Record of Lean/Operational Excellence Leadership
  • Proven Proficiency in Supporting Word Class Quality Standards, including ISO 9001.
  • Prior Knowledge of Welding Standards Preferred (e.g., AWS and EN)Performance Skill Requirements

  • College level Degree in a manufacturing related discipline (operations and/or engineering)
  • Minimum 10 years' manufacturing experience with direct prior experience in job shop, including a discreet build-to-order large capital equipment manufacturing environment.
  • Direct prior experience with high-precision multidisciplinary manufacturing, including machining, welding, paint, electro-hydraulic integration and final assembly and test.
